Want to know a secret?
Tucked away in the far-flung corners of Britain are
enticing but little-known concert venues you'll love for the
setting as much as the music
words by Jessica Duchen

Everyone knows of the Albert Halls, Barbicans and the Royal Festival Halls
of this world but tucked out of sight in quiet villages around the UK are
music venues of no lesser quality. Dartington Hall in Totnes, St Wilfrid's
Church in Cheshire, Pollock house in Glasgow…these are just three of the
wonderful little known recital halls you can find from John O' Groats to
Lands End. And we're not talking about an evening of modest amateur
music making. The best secret venues attract some of the world's finest
classical artists, musicians attracted year after year by their unique
qualities, be it a magical location, special acoustic, sheer ambience or all
three. Whatever brings them back, we're sure the secret concert venues
celebrated (here) - from historic Hatchlands Park to the modern Champs Hill
- will have the same effect on you.

St Wilfrid's Church
Pianist Leon McCawley, himself a Cheshire native adores St. Wilfrid's, 'It's a
delightful church in the old village of Grappenhall and has really taken off as a
charming concert venue' he says. Besides Leon other artists who have performed
here include Steven Isserlis and violinist Tasmin Little. The church dates back to
Norman times and the grinning feline carved into the stonework above the west
window has sparked speculation as to whether it's Lewis Carroll's original Cheshire
cat.

The other venues in the article included:
Dartington Hall, Totnes, Devon (01803 847070)

FOLLOWING the article's publication Norman Cutter, Chairman of Live At St.
Wilfrid's, was quoted in the Warrington-Worldwide on-line newspaper as saying, "It
is wonderful to be included in such a list and in addition to hosting artists of
international standing, the committee likes to encourage young artists of potential".

The Committee comprising of Norman Cutter, Gordon Berry, Ian Roberts and Peter
Tharme are a most modest quartet when orchestrating their own accomplishments.
We should be very proud of what they have achieved and continue to achieve. To
have the reputation as being in the top 10 in the country for providing "secret"
accessible classical concerts to the masses at affordable prices is wonderful for
music itself and a musical venture of enlightenment for the audience.

The only problem is now the "secret" is out, beyond our bounds, we parishioners
and locals will have to book very early to secure a ticket!
